The worst place to go.people that go there are low class.very dirty and small.bartender with skirt on is very rude.food is absolutely horrible.if you want a night out to get tipsy bartender will not let serve you in the future if you get drunk..there are better pubs in St. Catharines than this one.
While waiting for our food Tuesday aug 30th about noon we saw the bartender eat food with his fingers from plates BEFORE they were taken out to customers! Totally inexcusable. We watched to make sure he did not eat from our plates before we got them or they would have been sent back. Would never go there again. Who knows what goes on before the food makes its way out to a public place? Disgusting!f
I'm not sure why there is a single poor review here. My husband and I go all the time, and have yet to be even slightly dissapointed. The steak deal is not only one of the best deals in town, but done to perfection and moutwateringly spectacular every time. We've ordered nearly everything on the menu and will continue to do so. As far as the staff, perhaps on one or two occasions a yound girl just isn't well suited for the job...but hey, that's life.Overall the staff are very friendly and will go the extra mile to satisfy us. Highly recommend The Kilt to anyone. Cheers!
My son, boyfriend and I arrived at the Kilt and Clover in Port Dalhousie tonight around 6:30pm for their Tuesday special of $2.50/lb Mussels. This was our first time there and were excited and hungry for dinner. Our server (Venus was our server's name on the cheque) came over and we quickly placed an order for my son's meal with our drink order. When our server returned with the drinks we then immediately placed our order (one ceasar salad, one order of poppers and two orders of mussels.) My son's order came out about 15 minutes later. About another 10 minutes later our server returned to tell us the food would be right out. Another 10 minutes later she finally returned (with no food) but to tell us that the kitchen "just" informed her that they were out of poppers. We at this point ordered another round of drinks. We were very hungry and just wanted the rest of the food out. Finally another 5 minutes later our meals arrived. Frustrated and knowing we had come to eat alot of mussels, we ordered 2 more orders right away; my boyfriend also asked if they would take another 40 minutes and the server replied she did not know and that they had a wine tour (who arrived after us) holding up the kitchen. After another 25 minutes she finally returned to tell us they were not ready yet. At this point we were done with it all. It was getting late and dark, the bugs were biting and we just wanted to eat a good meal. We asked for the check, paid exact change (my very first time doing so and coming from someone that always tips 20%) and left. Many things made this experience a bad one. At no time was the server apologetic and seemed to avoid us and make excuses (the wine tour excuse made no sense at all when I saw three tables come in after us; one was done eating, one was already eating and the other, who arrived 20 minutes after us, received their food at the same time) No manager was informed (to my knowledge) or approached the table to discuss the timely wait for such a simple order of salad and appetizers. As well as no side plates, dirty washrooms and overall bad service made this a one time only dining spot. As a fellow server of 6 years I thought the whole experience was ridiculous.
This was absolutely the worst ever. The only good thing was the friendly server. the outside tables were filthy. Decided to try the t-bone special- horrible. The drinks( sodas) had zero fizz in them. Not the fault of the restaurant, but the people at the next table were having a horrible fight, and there were people smoking on the patio in spite of the no smoking signs. The table on the other side of us was a younger crowd, and every other word was the f-word. How does this place manage to always seem busy? I don't get it- just awful. But then, when your slogan is "warm beer and lousy food" how do you complain? Take it seriously.
Don't believe their motto of "Warm Beer and Lousy Food". The Bangers and Mash with Gravy were great and the beer is served at "cellar" temperature. Felt like a true English or Scottish pub.
We really wanted to try someplace different in Port, as many of the restaurants have gone downhill. Chalk up another downhill race at the Kilt & Clover. Our server was nice enough, but we waited WAY TOO LONG for food. I had the chicken pot pie, and it was, um, disgusting. It looked and tasted like it was dragged out from the bottom of the freezer where it had been residing for a number of unhappy years. There was no point complaining - no-one was around to complain to! We won't be returning...
We decided to return after a disappointing visit a year ago. The location and decor are, as always, hard to beat. As good as any British pub. The servers were friendly. But the fish and chips were still mediocre. (They don't even call them Fish and Chips on the menu - it's some silly contrived name like Swimmers and Spuds). Everything was overcooked - the chips were like broken masonry. Worse still, they had a Saturday night hockey game on the TV and the sound was deafening. Couldn't wait to get out. And for a Saturday night it was not very busy.
The Kilt and Clover sits majestically on the corner of Main Street in Old Port Dalhousie, Ontario. On afternoons and evenings all through the weekend, the long patio that stretches around the corner is a great place to watch people, cars and choppers go by in all shapes and sizes. Many are loud, but that is part of the fun. They have a great selection of local beers on tap. The girls are pleasant and welcoming. The place is never empty. But then, you get your food and that is when the fun ends. The nachos were crisp but tasteless. A melted lump of cheep marble cheese sat in the middle of the dish with under cocked tomatoes, onions and green olives. No jalapenos, not even in the sample of pathetic salsa they served on the side. The burger was thick, burned on the outside with still a noticeable hint of pink in the middle; a big no-no in burgers. The toppings were modest but the fries where limp and burgundy-brown (instead of golden yellow) with the taste of over-used oil. The same fries accompanied my son’s chicken strips but were from another batch, because at least they were warm this time. The chili was smothered with chili powder unnecessarily with the same cheap cheese sprinkled on top. The sauce on the penne definitely came out of a can. The beer remained good and my kids enjoyed watching all the motorcycles and choppers go by. I paid good money for good heartburn. I am not going back.
Service was excellent... great music. I love their wings.......Nowhere can you get better or cheaper wings!
Overall bad service from the outset. The restaurant was only half full, yet no one came to provide menus or take our order. After waiting 5 minutes I went to look for them, finding them just 10 feet away around a corner to discover that they were focused on wrapping the two hundredth fork and knife with a napkin while customers went unserved. When asked if they were serving our section they then came right out, took our drink order, brought the drinks, then took our food order. Given that we ordered basic pub food we expected it to be out in a reasonable time. After 20 minutes with no food or communication we asked when the food would be coming, they said the kitchen was backed up (even though the place was only half full), that it would be out in 10 minutes. After 15 minutes we asked again when the food would be coming out, they said it would be right out. The cold french fries and cold chicken wings arrived shortly after that conversation; 5 minutes later the burger and fish and chips showed up. A total 40 minute wait for pub food. The waitress was seemingly friendly the entire time. She is either oblivious, an incredibly insincere talented actress, or trapped in a badly run restaurant with no training - I suspect the latter. Perhaps their forte is serving beer with occasional food, it certainly is not serving food (I am guessing a mixed drink would be equally challenging for the Kilt). Don't do it! Drive, walk or wait for something better - we should have.
We enjoyed the snack the beer and the friendly bar maid.We liked the Scottish and Celtic flags and things on the walls and ceilings,a nice touch. We will return again to try the other food and hope they have some harp ale next time.
Great place to come before the bar or on a summer weekday night. great service my friends and i always sit in the same corner on the porch so we always get this amazing guy.... completely forget his name......so nice, cute, and will go out of his way for us specially when my friend a lighter.. another night there was a mussel special and after about 6 orders of mussels to my one friend alone he ended up wipeing out the place of them around 11pm. cant wait for it to get warm again and head down here for some good times. but be warned it is small and remember it is a pub so dont expect a 5 star fillet mignon
This place is very comfortable as soon as you walk in. The fire place is a great place to sit in the winter. Our gentleman waiter or bartender (whatever you want to call him) was very busy but made sure we had a menu and knew the specials very shortly after we sat. Food and drinks came promptly and with a smile. We will be back soon!
We weren't ready right away to give our order so the waiter, dressed in a kilt, (the place does have ambience) didn't come back and take our order for over half an hour -- after we got his attention. Then it took a while but we got the food. The clam chowder was tomato based and just tasted like fishy tomato soup (no notice about this in the menu). I wonder if it really was "clam chowder", now!? It came with two stale pieces of bread on the side. My friend's order had over done fries. Not impressed at all, I must say.
The open face roast beef was a little on the skimpy side, but what beef was there was good, gravy good, fries good, fish was really good, Shopsy style slaw (why?) and homemade tartar sauce nice and dilly. We overheard the server say they ran out of beef so I guess that would explain my husband's skimpy portion. The place didn't bother me one bit but my husband said he wouldn't go back. Server was friendly if a little forgetful. Bowling on TV instead of the NFL playoffs, geeessshhh
This place is my FAVORITE place in the Port. The Chicken Wings are fabulous, Mussels are amazing, good weekly specials but I've only tried the two so far. Waitress staff is always top notch. Service isn't super fast but they're always busy so the waitresses do incredibly well serving so many and always having a smile. Good location too, if you get a table outside it's mint as the area is filled with lush tree's and people walking about. Seems to attract a nice crowd of people too. I go many times a year and haven't been disappointed yet.
This place does not honour customer service. The server was rude and argued with us when we complained that the ribs were fatty and grey. "Ribs are generally fatty" Well when you're paying 10$ you get what you pay for. And paid for it you will, even if you dont enjoy them and eat less than half. The void must come off the waitress's paycheque because she seemed to take it personally when we said the ribs were gross. The service was horrible. This was the second time I went and the first time the service was horrible too. pretty pathetic. When we asked to talk to the manager, he told my friend he didn't appreciate her additide. Wow.
The server we had that night was much better than the usual bad quilt & clover servers. We were greeted promptly and was asked about drinks right away. The server came to check on us quite a few times which was very nice. The beer as they say is lousy even though it's suppose to be premium on tap. They don't know how to keep and make their beer and lager. However, I will go back because I do like their days of the week specials. It's a hit and miss type of place.
Probably a lively little place for the summer crowd of drunken teens and twenty-somethings, but not a real family restaurant. The food was REALLY greasy, especially the garlic bread, which was almost soaked in grease (BLECCCH!), and I was disappointed that the steak sandwich was that thin, frozen stuff, FRIED, of course.
