A hot cup of joe and the warm and sociable surroundings of Calgary’s independent coffee shops are real productivity boosters for work and study. Most coffee shops welcome laptop tappers, but don’t abuse the privilege with five-hour, one-coffee sittings — you’ll ruin it for the rest of us!

A cool, contemporary coffee nook, Kawa also serves beer and wine and its food menu features a unique combo of Polish and Middle Eastern dishes. The non-coffee beverages and excellent cuisine may distract you from your typing, but you won’t mind.

Phil & Sebastian Coffee House

The Marda Loop location of this blossoming local coffee chain is a favourite laptop-and-java haunt. Pick up a bag of the house-brand beans on your way out and keep that coffee-house buzz alive at the home and office.

Cadence Coffee

A Bowness neighbourhood institution, this coffee shop and diner serves bagels, burgers and BLTs with its hot drinks. Stools at the front window and back bar are nice perches for loners on laptops.

Waves Coffee House

602 17 Avenue SW, Calgary AB T2S 0B4

A growing local café chain, the window seats at its two 17th Avenue Southwest locations are pleasant perches from which to watch foot traffic on one the city’s main shopping promenades.

The quintessential Mexican meal, tacos are also a relatively scarce commodity in Calgary. However, we’ve done some digging and unearthed the select few restaurants that make truly marvelous versions of these hand-held snacks.
The city’s summer season features a delicious dance card of culinary festivals and events. Many, such as Stampede-time pancake breakfasts, are easy to access the day of, but the various tasting and tippling shindigs listed here can fill up quickly, so purchasing tickets sooner than later for these foodie festivities is recommended. The city’s pathway system is one of the longest in North America. Given its lengthy stretches, the occasional rest and snack stop, though few and far between, are a welcome sight when walking, biking and inline skating. Here are a few restaurants, cafés and snack shacks located on or near our scenic cycling system. Image credit: iStock.com/mihailomilovanovic.
