Everything about Blast Athletic Club, a gym located on Dupont Street, is open, transparent and done under the supervision of extremely qualified coaches. There are plenty of the training tools you’d expect within the 5,000 square foot facility: weights, kettlebells, TRX suspension stations — but Blast Athletic Club also has tools and facilities that set the gym apart like its large Astroturf area, 200-to-800 lb tractor tires and power sleds.
“Who wants to be average?” asks Blast Athletic Club owner Marvin Mitchell. “Everybody wants to be excellent — and our role is to help you become excellent.”
Founded in October 2010, Blast Athletic Club is a training space open to all levels of clients from beginners to elite athletes. The gym offers a wide range of options like Olympic lifting, kettlebell classes and private coaching. But it’s the implementation of said programs that makes this gym stand out.
“We want to help people discover and tap into their all-around athletic ability,” explains Marvin, “strength, power, speed, quickness, reaction.”
Marvin notes that the fitness industry as a whole tends to focus on aesthetics as a selling point for exercise, leading participants into performing exercises to give them only the appearance of an athlete. Those who train at Blast Athletic Club are taught to create an athlete’s body, with toned muscles occurring as a by-product of athletic training.
