A store’s name often has a personal meaning to it, whether it’s the result of a clever play on words thought up by the owner or a tribute to someone they loved. Khin Chung’s shop, Tashi Apparel Inc., falls into the latter category. She named her women’s clothing store after her beloved dog, Tashi, a name that means “good fortune” in Tibetan.
“She passed on in 2010,” says Khin. “The name is sort of how I keep her alive.” While the name brought Khin plenty of good fortune while developing Tashi, she still felt a little lonely for furry company. Though no dog could ever replace her beloved Tashi, in 2012 Khin fell for a new face, a six-pound pom-chi named Mika. “She’s very friendly, very playful,” Khin says. “I even have little kids coming into the store to give her treats. She is a little star on our strip of Yonge Street.”
