At just 16 years old, Jose left home looking for adventure and life experience. Traveling through the United States, he worked kitchen jobs in California and Boston, progressing from washing dishes and prepping food to eventually cooking. Discovering his passion for food and cooking, Jose made it his goal to own a restaurant and become a chef. In 2006, he opened The Lake Grill in Whitby. “Since I started working in kitchens, I’ve wanted to own my own restaurant," says Jose. "This is a dream come true for me.”

Beyond The Lake Grill, Jose hosts a televised cooking show every month and he has even competed in some of Canada’s most prestigious televised cooking competitions. “I’m a social guy,” he says. “From the competitions and TV shows to every day interactions with my customers, I like being friendly and open.”

I am a local and frequent the restaurant. I truly enjoy the fact that within a few kilometers of my home, I can find the type of food that is usually reserved for the more up scale and expensive downtown region. Jose' is a chef more suited to a pricey hotel than a cozy well kept, family oriented establishment, in the port of Whitby. We regularly enjoy Sunday breakfast as a family, with a menu that ranges from single eggs sided with fresh cut fruit and free flowing premium coffee, to a more upscale Eggs Benedict, with equal additions of quality sides. Booking dinner on one occasion, I had mentioned to Jose' my preference for fish, Red Snapper being my favorite. On arriving that night with my family, the restaurant was fully booked and slightly backlogged. We were seated, served drinks and appetizers and settled for the evening. Jose' prepared for me a delectable fish supper with a Snapper he had hand picked at the market. This was accomplished regardless of one table that had booked for four, yet arrived with a party of ten. Welcoming service at that level is not reserved for myself, but is open to all who may venture in for a meal. If you are looking for quality and value, and take no issue with a clean modest decor, with an unrushed attitude, my recommendation stands. When you stop in say hi to Norma, she will treat you as family.

The place was a little cold when we got there. I got a new york steak instead of a sirloin steak(oh well). The veal was low quality and tasteless. The server was friendly but she gave us our bill and then asked if we wanted coffee or tea. No mention of dessert. I have eaten worse and definitely eaten better.
